Wilbur! [25 Jul 2008|11:36pm]

ernunnos

I'm not usually one for celebrity gossip, but [info]stachybotrys is highly annoyed by Sarah Jessica Parker, so I clicked this one, and the comments were worth it.

Poor guy. Married to SJP, and he gets caught horsing around. Talk about irony.

After so long, he was aching for one night of unbridled passion.

Q: What do Matthew Broderick and OJ Simpson have in common?

A: They've both been inside a white bronco.

I think body is more important. But if everything is average and she is good in the sack, then i'm lucky.

Don't look a gift horse in the mouth

"Maybe she should cut him loose and move on w/ her life!"

Right on, sister! She should totally put him out to stud. She must be chomping at the bit to get out of this marriage. He's hitched his star to her wagon for far too long!

"SJP may be a butter-face but her body is slammin', just watch Honeymoon in Vegas when she was at her prime. "

She was also good in The Neverending Story...well, up until the scene where she sinks in the quicksand.

Democrats: the free speech party. [25 Jul 2008|11:20pm]

End of the Affair

Reporters who have covered Obama's biography or his problems with certain voter blocs have been challenged the most aggressively. "They're terrified of people poking around Obama's life," one reporter says. "The whole Obama narrative is built around this narrative that Obama and David Axelrod built, and, like all stories, it's not entirely true. So they have to be protective of the crown jewels." Another reporter notes that, during the last year, Obama's old friends and Harvard classmates were requested not to talk to the press without permission.

I love it. Telling private citizens to shut the fuck up?! Let's not forget that way back in the '90s, the Clintons administration floated a proposal to outlaw all encryption schemes that didn't have a government-held backdoor key. A lot of the SSLeay development (the 's' in the 'https' you see in the URL when you go to a secured site) was moved to Europe to escape that. Even the stuff in the PATRIOT act that everyone excoriates Bush for (and rightly so) was prepared during the Clinton's reign. It was just sitting on the shelf waiting for an excuse to get it passed.

Obama voted for that too. He's just as much an enemy of free speech, he's just better at selling it. And boy, is he good.

On NPR this morning I heard one of the panelists catch himself, "Pres—Candidate Obama".

I hope the first article is correct though. We need someone to start asking some serious questions about who this guy is and what he really wants.

Fences [25 Jul 2008|10:40pm]

seattle

[sadomachine]
Does anyone know if there are laws on where a neighbor can build a fence. Is it on the property line or does it have to be a few inches away from it on their side? I've been searching the RCWs and Municipal Code, but can't find it. This makes me think that on the property line is ok. Can anyone point me to a specific law that says otherwise? Any personal experience?

Thanks.

Tuesday in the City with Minors [26 Jul 2008|12:07am]

cityofmilwaukee

[come_hither9]
Hello!
I'm a Milwaukee native but I just got back from 6 years in Montreal, so I'm a bit rusty in the entertaining department. This coming Tuesday (the 29th), I've gotten myself into entertaining my 17 year old sister in law for the whole day in the city, so I'd like to ask for some pointers. She's a very cool and fun girl, and she's used to hipster Montreal culture - she loves concerts, music, shopping, but all on the artier rather than preppier side. I figure I'll just wander the east side with her - take her to Comet and do a Gloriosos-based picnic by the lakefront and go record shopping and such, but I'd LOVE some input:

-Are there any special events going on that night? In places that I can take a minor? Little concerts, big art openings, festivals, parties - I know what's going on at Summerfest, but if there are any secret fun things going on I'd love to know about them. She wants to see ballet, but it seems like the Milwaukee Ballet takes the summer off - is there any substitute?
-Any other suggestions for cafes and shops and nice places to walk and things to see? I only know the places I liked 8 years ago when I was in high school, and I barely know if those places still exist. To best please her, I'm leaning towards places that could be described as hip and happening, but anything that'll impress her is cool :) I'd like to stay in the downtown/east side/ third ward district, since we won't be driving.

Thanks so much for your help! I'm looking forward to an excellent day getting to know the city again.

Hit & run in Capitol Hill? [25 Jul 2008|08:41pm]

seattle

[ein_traum]
There was a hit & run involving a car & a bunch of bicyclists (critical mass folks possibly?) on E Aloha in Capitol Hill about an hour ago - apparently a driver was either trying to back up into the street, go around the bikes, or was just irritated that he/she was stuck behind them and decided to drive straight through them and kept going.

No one was killed, but at least one guy was bleeding. Apparently some of the bicyclists took off after the vehicle, but I don't know if they caught him or her.

"Aliens! Us? Is This One Of Your Earth Jokes?" [25 Jul 2008|10:53pm]

Call me a geek, I have to admit seeing the cast of "Watchmen" on EW gave me a semi. I was going to see "Dark Knight" anyway but there's a trailer in it...

Plus a "Lost Skeleton of Cadavera" sequel? Joy! That almost makes up for the fact that they are doing a sequel to "Donnie Darko" without Richard Kelly.

What else is happening? Not much I have a weekend off which is a rarity I guess. Hopefully finish up the next scene which is interesting because I had to create a character I wasn't expecting to create...This is why no matter how much you prepare a writing project or how much you add and change it during future drafts nothing beats writing that first draft and figuring out where that highway goes to.

I recall Dick saying that he was not a character in "A Scanner Darkly" he was the whole book, or Grant Morrison had used "The Invisibles" as his diary. The notes to "Desperadoes" are for all intents and purpose my private diaries and I hope when I finish that others will kinda grok it. In some way through the art of lying, the core skill of storytelling, I am trying to express some deep truths about myself and the world as I see it that I would never be able to fully express even to my closest friends and family. Tell it slant, Emily also said, or to qoute Zimmy, we all feel the same we just sell it from a different point if view.

Seafair: Captain's Club [25 Jul 2008|05:53pm]

[mspurrmeow]
The Chevrolet Cup Hydroplane Races and KeyBank Airshow is on August 1-3.

We usually get Captains Club seating, but unfortunately missed our chance on tickets this year. If anyone knows of anyone who has these awesome tickets and would be willing to give them up (or won't be able to go at the last minute) PLEASE let me know. We need three tickets.

Yeah, we know that there are other viewing options, but we're endeared to the Captains Club, and are not hot on fighting random crowds.

Help will be appreciated, snark will be summarily disregarded. :-) Thanks!

It's a miracle. [25 Jul 2008|04:27pm]

ernunnos

So the Obama Christ is making his triumphant entry into Jerusalem Europe, and in the process manages to perform a miracle: on the old front lines of the cold war, he invokes the dreams of his self-proclaimed Marxist father—who argued against Kenya's alliance with the U.S., and for the same socialist policies that are currently causing starvation and hyperinflation in Zimbabwe—and nobody considers it in poor taste.

Not a matter for experts. [25 Jul 2008|01:51pm]

ernunnos

Tamara and Kim are having a blog war over the perennial debate on the ideal infantry cartridge.

This is the stupidest kind of argument: the one you have after the answer is already obvious.

You don't have to be an expert. Walk into any sporting goods store in the late summer, tell them your teenage son or daughter needs a light-recoiling rifle appropriate for hunting thin-skinned 150-200 lb. game. They will turn around and grab something right of the rack, and load you up with a couple boxes of ammo with a little silhouettes of deer on them, as opposed to chipmunks, coyotes, or bear. You'll be in and out of there in 15 minutes. The answers are known. People haul those answers out into the woods with them every fall. Have been doing it for years.

It's only when you describe your game as "humans" instead of "deer" that it suddenly becomes controversial.

Where is your favorite place to get cupcakes? When I think of a place to get gourmet cupcakes, I think of Cupcake Royale, and some people rave about them and other people just do not like them.

Where would you go? Key, they need to have Red Velvet.

Thanks!

ETA: I would make my own, but they're to be a surprise and I only need two.

Research Paper [25 Jul 2008|04:24pm]

genderoutlaws

[melssexysecret]
I had to choose a topic for my Reasearch writing class for my final paper. According to the proffessor, "You need to narrow your topic. It should be something that is current, controversial, relevant and an issue in which you can show multiple sides. Please re-submit."

I chose gender as a topic. I will be writing about Gender and how it is not binary (so, transgender, androgyn, gender queer, etc). How sex and gender differ, how now-a-days gender is questioned, and a lot of people do not believe their gender matches their sex.

With that being said, so I can get a job, could you guys reccommend good resources online? I want to make sure I don't just google websites that have false or bad information or I don't miss a really good site (or book, or whatever).

Thanks!

Oh, and I'll probably have some type of interview/survey/poll to include. I think it's better to get research from peers as well as in books and online.

Once Naked For Nirvana, Now A Teen Spirit [25 Jul 2008|01:01pm]

[ music | Paul Anka, "Smells Like Teen Spirit" ]

By Chana Joffe-Walt

All Things Considered, July 23, 2008 - Imagine if millions of people had seen you naked before you were old enough to say "embarrassing." That's the story of Spencer Elden, whom you may know as the little baby floating towards a dollar bill on the cover of Nirvana's 1991 album, Nevermind.

Nearly 17 years later, amid hating school and playing water polo, Elden is still struggling to make sense of his (very) public image.

"Quite a few people in the world have seen my penis," he says from his home in Los Angeles. Read more... )

Did you know?

Kurt Cobain was apparently inspired to write 'Smells like Teen Spirit' by one of the many ditties in Gravity's Rainbow: "Ah, they do bother him, these free women in their teens, their spirits are so contagious, I'll tell you it's just -out, -ray, -juss, / Spirit is so -con, -tay, -juss, / Nobody knows their a-ges..."
